Panettone

 Panettone

Panettone is a traditional Italian sweet bread that is typically enjoyed during the holiday season. It is a soft, fluffy bread that is studded with raisins and candied orange peel, and it has a distinctive dome shape. Panettone is believed to have originated in Milan, Italy, and it is a popular gift and dessert during the holiday season.

To make panettone, you will need:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup candied orange peel
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm milk

To prepare the panettone, start by mixing the flour and yeast together in a large mixing bowl. Add the lukewarm water and mix until a soft dough forms. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and set it aside in a warm place to rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Once the dough has risen, add the sugar, butter, eggs, raisins, candied orange peel, salt, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Mix until well combined, then gradually add the lukewarm milk, mixing until the dough becomes soft and smooth.

Transfer the dough to a well-greased panettone mold (or a 9-inch round cake pan) and smooth the top with a spatula. Cover the pan with a damp cloth and let it rise for another hour, or until it has doubled in size. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and bake the panettone for 45-50 minutes, or until it is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the panettone cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve the panettone sliced and topped with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, or enjoy it on its own as a sweet treat. Buon appetito!
