This warm, spiced wine is the perfect drink to enjoy on a cold winter evening. To make it, combine red wine, sugar, orange juice, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in a saucepan and heat until steaming.


Here is a more detailed recipe for making mulled wine:

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 4 whole allspice
  • 2 star anise
  • Optional additional flavourings: a few slices of fresh ginger, a splash of brandy or other spirit, a few slices of apple

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the red wine, sugar, orange slices, and spices.
  2. If using, add any additional flavourings such as ginger, brandy, or apple slices.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the wine is hot but not boiling.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mulled wine simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the flavours have melded together.
  5. Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and orange slices.
  6. Serve the mulled wine hot, in mugs or heatproof glasses.
